Beeston Goes Bananas
On the morning of Saturday 7 March 2009 about four thousand people joined the Fairtrade Beeston group in Beeston Square for an event to promote the idea of Beeston becoming a Fairtrade Town. The highlight of the event was an opportunity to take part in a mass banana eating as part of a national attempt on the world record for the most number of people eating a Fairtrade banana in a 24 hour period.
The record attempt was officially part of our AGM agenda here in Dovecote Lane at the same time. Here twenty seven people ate fairtrade bananas, alongside the hundreds of people registered to eat their banana in the Square.
In total, 1,957 people across Beeston registered with the Fairtrade Beeston group to eat a Fairtrade banana during the 24 hour period. Nationwide, over 470,000 people took part!
